 In Like a Lamb
March is obviously coming in like a lamb. Temperature was in the seventies, the sky is full of geese catching the brisk south wind heading back to the Great White North. The streams are already full of trout coming up from the lake to spawn, and my yard is quite active with frisky squirrels. My computer nanny recommended that I take a rest day after the shellacking I took on the trainer race yesterday after getting dropped on the first minor climb. Ended up doing a three hundred plus exercise load for a poor result. Couldn't let this beautiful riding day go by though. My first yearly usual first long ride is the Elmira Corning loop at over fifty miles. I didn't quite dare to try it this year due to my suspect health issues. Opted instead for a ride to Eldridge Park and after returning I planned on adding a climbing loop so that I still could get in at least fifty miles. Ride started out a little rough as had to push the first seventeen miles into a brisk headwind. Only averaged in the low teens on the way up. Took a short break at the park and caught the tailwind back to Montour. Ended up spinning out my new compact replacement crank with speed in the upper twenties on the way back with the wind on my back. Have bought a new big chainring to replace the compact but plan on waiting until my legs get a little stronger. Felt a little hollowed out after the first thirty-five but really wanted to get in fifty, so I popped a gel back and headed to Watkins with a pair of climbs to Reading Center. Felt good on the first five-hundred-foot highway climb and did it easily in the big compact chainring. Really wanted to do the second climb in the big chainring but it has a short steep section, band I wimped out and spun it in the small ring. Actually enjoyed the climbing section more than the fast stuff. Hopefully I'll maintain I positive attitude toward climbing this year and do a little better. Finished the ride with a forty plus downhill and another fairly slow couple of miles in the headwind again. Turned out to be really nice ride. Failed to see any other riders today except a couple of E-bikes in the villages.
